Our Shareholders, Our Culture
Global Statement of Purpose: Afognak Native Corporation exists so that Shareholders have a perpetual source of land use, shared financial and cultural wealth.
Afognak Native Corporation is part of the Alutiiq Nation, and the Alaska Native people indigenous to the Kodiak Island Archipelago, who have inhabited the Kodiak Archipelago for over 7,500 years. Afognak’s shareholders are descended specifically from the village of Afognak, on Afognak Island in the northern part of the Archipelago. Afognak’s wholly owned subsidiary, Alutiiq is named after our people.
Afognak Native Corporation, as an Alaska Native Corporation, is responsible for meeting economic, social, and cultural obligations to its shareholders. Afognak is accomplishing this by providing benefits to individual shareholders and strengthening Ag’wanermiut “Our Community”. It is important that these two areas co-exist because by unifying Ag’wanermiut, we develop a cohesive strength and by providing benefits to individual shareholders we empower every shareholder. Afognak’s success has provided not only annual dividends to our individual shareholders, but also annual financial donations and in-kind contributions to numerous organizations that improve the quality of life of our Native people.
Afognak has historically supported cultural programs operated by organizations such as:
- The Alutiiq Museum & Archeological Repository
