Oil lamps were used traditionally by the Alutiiq people as a source of light and heat. Today, they are still lit at cultural gatherings and other important community events to represent our past, present and future.

Afognak Native Corporation is committed to the increase of shareholder hire.  Employment opportunities are available through full-time and seasonal employment with Afognak/Alutiiq, LLC.  The Alutiiq website offers a full listing of current job openings within Afognak Native Corporation and its subsidiaries, and is updated daily.

Talent Bank

In order to link Afognak Native Corporation shareholders and descendants up with employment opportunities Afognak is distributing a Talent Bank Form.  The information gathered from the Talent Bank Form is placed in a database to track shareholders and descendants education and work history.

This database is used by Shareholder Services to link qualified shareholders and descendants up with employment opportunities within and outside the corporation.  Shareholders and descendants are encouraged to complete a Talent Bank Form if:

  1. They have not already submitted a form, or
  2. They have additional work and/or educational experience that they would like reflected in the database.

Ataku Manager Program

Afognak Native Corporation's Ataku (Later On) Manager Program is a two year full-time program designed to provide Afognak Native Corporation shareholders and descendants with the skills and knowledge base necessary to secure managerial level positions within an Alaska Native Corporation or other business environment.  Although employment with Afognak or its subsidiaries is not guaranteed after graduation from the program, it is anticipated that through concentrated training and mentoring, the Ataku Manager will be prepared to assume a managerial level position within the Corporation or another organization after successfully completing the program.  The Ataku Manager can work in one of the following areas: finance, construction, human resources, legal, bid and proposals, or information technology.

The Ataku Manager will work with an experienced department manager and/or director to learn the systems, policies and procedures, and managerial philosophy of the Corporation.  The Ataku Manager will be responsible for supporting regular functions in the Ataku Manager's chosen department such as producing reports, monitoring contracts, and completing projects in accordance with contract and departmental requirements and within budget.

High School Intern Program

The Afognak Native Corporation High School Intern program provides four Afognak shareholders and descendants that are going to high school or just graduated from high school, with work experience and an opportunity to explore career options.  Through their internship experience, Afognak Interns will learn about workplace ethics, employment opportunities available through Afognak Native Corporation, the global nature of Afognak and its Alutiiq subsidiaries, and how to excel in a team environment.

Interns can work in the following departments: finance, information technology, legal, construction, human resources, business development/proposal writing, and media relations.  High School summer interns are required to work 40 hours per week over a three to four week period and are based in the Anchorage office.  Interns may travel to an Afognak Native Corporation subsidiary location outside of Anchorage during their internship.

Interns work half-days providing administrative support in a department and half-days on a group project. The 2010 High School Interns group project was to create a video for the Afognak website that described subsistence and discussed their experience in the Intern program. Tribal Intern Program

The Afognak Native Corporation Tribal Intern program provides Afognak shareholders and descendants that are going to high school or are attending college, with work experience and an opportunity to explore career options.  Through their internship experience, Afognak Interns learn about workplace ethics, employment opportunities available through Tribal entities, the global nature of Afognak and its Alutiiq subsidiaries, and how to excel in a team environment.

Tribal Interns primary work location will be Native Village of Afognak’s office in Kodiak or Native Village of Port Lions’ office in Port Lions. Internships are available in the summer months for up to 12 weeks.

Tribal interns are paid a competitive intern wage. One time roundtrip airfare may be provided for interns who live outside of the intern work location that participate in the program. Shareholder Services will examine on a case-by-case basis whether a successful applicant qualifies for one-time roundtrip airfare to the intern work location.

College Intern Program

Afognak's Intern Program is designed to build the next generation of Native leaders.  We currently offer internships in:

  • Operations and Maintenance
  • Business Development
  • Bids and Proposals
  • Human Resources
  • Legal

Interns attending school with a minimum of 12 credits and working 20 hours a week will receive supplemental pay for 20 hours, a competitive internship wage and a full benefits package including vision, medical, dental and retirement.

Apprentice Program

The goal of the Apprentice program is to provide intensive on-the-job training to two highly motivated shareholders or descendants that are interested in working in pre-mid level positions in one of the areas that Afognak/Alutiiq does business.  It is anticipated that through concentrated training and mentoring, the Apprentices will be qualified to enter their chosen fields after one year of on-the-job training.

Apprentices are expected to work full-time (40 hours a week).  The length of employment will be determined on a case-by-case basis to accommodate the training needs but will not exceed a one-year period.  Participants can work in one of the following departments:

  • Information Technology
  • Operations & Maintenance
  • Human Resources
  • Business Development
  • Lands
  • Security
  • Logistics

Work location will vary depending on available work and the successful applicants' area of interest. The 2010-2011 Apprentice Program is currently filled. Applications for the 2011-2012 Apprentice Program will  become available in September 2011 with an anticipated program start date of October 2011.
