Shareholder Training
North Slope Training Program
Afognak Native Corporation has partnered with CH2M HILL and the Southwest Alaska Vocation Education Center (SAVEC) to support the 2010 North Slope Training Program. The application deadline for this program has passed.
During the three week training, individuals will participate in classroom and lab trainings that will prepare them for operations and maintenance positions on the North Slope. Participants will learn how to be valuable members of the Corrosion and Under Inspection team, and the safety requirements and demands of everyday life on the North Slope. All graduates of the training camp will be considered for employment with CH2M HILL.
The three week training camp took place February 15 - March 5, 2010, in King Salmon, Alaska. Minimum requirements to participate in the program include:
- An Alaskan resident
- 18 years or older
- Completed high school or have GED - transcript required
- Valid Alaska driver's license with access to 5 year driving record
- Must pass a drug check indicator
- Unemployed, underemployed, or need job skills training to become or remain self-sufficient wage earner
Housing, meals and training will be provided through a grant received from the Alaska State Training and Employment Program (STEP). To qualify for funding, applicant must have contributed to Alaska Unemployment Insurance benefits within the last 3 years. Please note that successful applicants will be required to pay their own round-trip transportation expenses to SAVEC for the three week training camp. Shareholder Development is available to assist Shareholders and descendants research scholarship and work ready programs which they may qualify for to help with transportation costs.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks may provide credit through the UAF Bristol Bay Campus and Housing and Urban Development Grant.

Future Leaders Outreach Program
Afognak Native Corporation sponsored a three day Future Leaders Summit January 26-28, 2010, in Anchorage, Alaska. The goal of the Future Leaders Summit is to prepare shareholders and descendants that are high school students for entering the workforce and/or college and vocational educational programs. Topics that were covered include:
- Creating eye-catching resumes;
- Secrets to keeping a job you like;
- Touring local college and vocational education campuses;
- Identifying free money for college and vocational education programs;
- Writing scholarship essays that wow; and
- Learning what employment opportunities are available in the Corporation.
The Corporation is currently planning to pay the travel expenses (including airfare, lodging and meals) for up to six high school students and two chaperones to participate in the Summit. The application deadline for Corporation funded slots has passed.
Although the Corporation has limited funds to pay transportation costs, the Summit is open to any shareholders and descendants who are high school students that would like to attend. If you would like your child to attend the Summit at your own cost or if you have questions about the program, please contact Shareholder Development.
Shareholder Employee Training Program
Afognak also offers a Shareholder Employee Training Program to support the success of shareholders employees and enhance their workplace skills. The purpose of the Shareholder Employee Success Program is to help shareholders that are currently employed by Afognak Native Corporation or one of its subsidiaries to accomplish their career goals by receiving the training they need to excel in the workplace. This program is designed to provide funding for shareholders and descendants to obtain training in areas that directly relate to their field of work such as; computer skills, business, accounting, and leadership. Afognak/Alutiiq has set aside $500 in training funds for each shareholder/descendant employee.
Scholarships
Shareholders and descendants that are employees are also encouraged to further their education. Afognak offers two different types of scholarships for shareholders and descendants. Click here for more information.
