Education Programs

Afognak Native Corporation offers two scholarship programs to assist shareholders/descendants who desire job and leadership skills.

Career Enhancement Opportunities Program

The Afognak Native Corporation Career Enhancement Opportunities (CEO) Program is designed to recognize and provide financial support to voting shareholders and their lineal descendants who are interested in enhancing their careers.  Applications are available throughout the year until the budget is expended.

NEW! An applicant can apply as many times as desired as long as the applicant does not receive more than $2,000 total per calendar year.

Who May Apply

  1. The CEO Program awards scholarships to voting Afognak Native Corporation Shareholders and their lineal descendants as defined by Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) of 1971, including any legally adopted children.   (43 U.S.C.A. § 1601).

  2. Must be accepted to, or enrolled in, or registered to take a class or course that will improve career opportunities or current positions.

  3. Qualified Employees and Board Members who meet all other qualifications under “Who May Apply”, are eligible.

  4. Applicants cannot apply CEO funds towards full-time traditional college or university attendance.  Full-time traditional college or university status is defined as follows:
             Undergraduate – 12 or more credit hours.
             Graduate – 9 or more credit hours.

GOOD NEWS! A CEO applicant may also apply for Higher Education Program (HEP) and Internship Program funding during the same year.  HEP funds cannot be awarded for the same purpose.

Review Process:

Afognak Native Corporation administers the Career Enhancement Opportunities Program.  When an application is received, the application will be distributed to the Committee members for review.  The total award will be determined by polling the Committee members and averaging the amounts by each member polled.

Once the form has been completed, print and sign the form and submit it along with the list of requirements provided in the CEO APPLICATION PACKET CHECK LIST.  Submission of all required documents constitutes a complete application.

Higher Education Program

The Afognak Higher Education Program (HEP) is designed to recognize and provide financial support to students with demonstrated scholastic ability that are seeking higher education in the traditional university, vocational education, and other students. 

APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR NOW AVAILABLE!  ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE POSTMARKED BY MARCH 12, 2010.

The HEP Program has three categories that students can apply under:

  1. Full-Time Students: This category is for students who will be attending school full-time during the 2010-2011 academic year.  Full-time traditional college or university status is defined as follows:
              Undergraduate – 12 or more credit hours.
              Graduate – 9 or more credit hours.

  2. Part-Time Students: This category is for students who will be attending school part-time during the 2010-2011 academic year.  Part-time traditional college or university status is defined as follows:
              Undergraduate - less than 12 credit hours
              Graduate - less than 9 credit hours

  3. Vocational Education: This category is for students who are preparing for professions that are non-academic and are directly related to a trade, occupation or vocation during the 2010-2011 academic year.

Who may apply:

  1. The Higher Education Program awards scholarships to voting Afognak Native Corporation Shareholders and their lineal descendants as defined by Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) of 1971, including legally adopted children.  (43 U.S.C.A. § 1601).

  2. Applicants must be accepted to, or enrolled in, accredited institutions, universities or colleges, vocational or trade schools.

  3. Qualified Employees and Board Members who also meet all other requirements under "Who May Apply", are eligible.

  4. Applicants must be a high school graduate or have your GED by the start of your postsecondary education to be eligible to apply for the HEP funding.

Program Funding

Funding is awarded annually and scholarship recipients will be announced at the Afognak Native Corporation Annual meeting to be held in May.  A HEP applicant may apply for Career Enhancement Opportunity (CEO) funding during the same year, provided that HEP funding has not been awarded for the same purpose.
