Shareholder Relations

Afognak Native Corporation is committed to programs that provide shareholders with opportunities for personal success, support a strong sense of pride in their Alutiiq heritage, and allow shareholders access to training to further their job skills and education.  Afognak sponsored activities to meet this commitment include: employment opportunities, communications, dividends, educational programs, and cultural activities.  Examples of some of the programs Afognak Native Corporation supports are below.  To learn more about programs for our shareholders visit the Shareholder Development page.

Communication

Communication with shareholders remains a high priority.  In addition to regular newsletters, Afognak conducts mailings to inform its shareholders of employment opportunities and other relevant information.  Afognak holds three informational meetings and an annual meeting per year, in an effort to keep all shareholders informed.  These meetings provide a forum for discussing Afognak’s business results, and also serve as an opportunity to strengthen shareholder ties to our Alutiiq culture.

Dividends

Afognak has paid shareholder dividends consistently since 1989.  Our dividend distributions have been significant to our over 780 shareholders and their families, dramatically impacting the quality of life of our Native people.

In addition to dividends, the Afognak Board designated the Shareholders’ Permanent Investment Fund and the Shareholders Trust Fund so that dollars from our business development operations provide long-term economic benefit to our shareholders.

Alutiiq Culture

Afognak supports programs that teach Alutiiq history and traditional ways to the Native community; giving our shareholders a sense of pride in their Alutiiq culture and passing on cultural knowledge to the next generation of shareholders.  Afognak Native Corporation supports the Native Village of Afognak’s Dig Afognak Culture Camps through donations and a long term lease of Afognak lands where the Camp currently resides.  Afognak also holds an annual shareholder camp for a week at Dig Afognak, providing shareholders the opportunity to immerse themselves in traditional activities such as skin sewing, plant identification and gathering, and mask carving.  During this week the Native Village of Afognak also holds an Afognak Peoples Picnic in the Old Village of Afognak.

Alutiiq Museum

Afognak, a founding member of the Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository, provides an annual donation to the Alutiiq Museum to support its mission.  For several years Afognak worked with the Alutiiq Museum to conduct archeological digs on our lands to save artifacts before they washed away from erosion or were destroyed by vandalism.  Many of those artifacts are housed, and cared for in the Repository.  In addition, the Alutiiq Museum provides numerous programs, functions, services and activities that support the preservation, education and increased awareness of the Alutiiq culture.

Language Program

Afognak supports the Alutiiq Museum’s and Native Village of Afognak and Native Village of Port Lions Alutiiq language revitalization efforts.  The Museum and tribes, working with organizations across Kodiak Island, are focused on saving and revitalizing the Alutiiq language.  Through a Master/Apprentice Program, resource development, and daily teaching, traditional Alutiiq speakers are passing Alutiiq onto the next generation.  If you are interested in any of these programs, please contact the Alutiiq Museum (907.486.7004), Native Village of Afognak (907.486.6357), or the Native Village of Port Lions (907.454.2234).

Death Donation

Afognak recognizes that the passing of a loved one is very difficult from both an emotional and financial perspective.  Afognak has established a donation program in the event of a death of an original shareholder.  If an original shareholder in your family passes away, and your family needs assistance, please contact Shareholder Relations.
