Scholarships: Higher Education Program
The Afognak Higher Education Program is designed to recognize and provide financial support to students with demonstrated scholastic ability that are seeking higher education in the traditional university, vocational education, and other students. By recognizing successful students, a more consistent image of Native scholars will be presented to other young Alaska Native students, thus encouraging them to seek higher education.

You can apply for funding under one of the following categories:

  1. Full-Time Students: This category is for students who will be attending school full-time during the 2008-2009 school year.
  2. Part-Time Students: This category is for students who will be attending school part-time during the 2008-2009 school year.
  3. Vocational Education:  This category is for students who are attending a vocational or trade school.

Who may apply:

  1. The Higher Education Program awards scholarships to Afognak Natives who are voting Shareholders of the Corporation and their lineal descendants as defined by Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) of 1971, including any legally adopted children.
  2. Must be accepted to, or enrolled in, accredited institutions, vocational or trade schools or non-accredited universities or colleges.
  3. Qualified employees and board members who meet all other qualifications under “Who May Apply”.
  4. Must be a high school graduate or have your GED equivalent by the start of your post-secondary education to be eligible to apply for HEP funding.

Program Funding
Funding is awarded annually and is announced at the ANC Annual meeting.  A HEP applicant may apply for CEO funding during the same year, provided that HEP funding has not been awarded for the same purpose.

Please read the application, policies, guidelines and procedures carefully!  Please note there have been changes to this year’s application. Applicants will plan accordingly to ensure a timely completion and receipt of all documents prior to the application deadline.

The 2008-2009 HEP Application postmark deadline has since passed (March 15, 2008). Applications for next year will be available January 1st. Awards for the 2008-2009 academic year will be announced at the Annual Meeting on May 31, 2008 in Port Lions.

Career Enhancement Opportunities Program
The Afognak Native Corporation (ANC) Career Enhancement Opportunities (CEO) Program is administering its Program for 2007. Applications are available beginning January 1, 2007. CEO applications are received year round until the budget is exhausted.

The ANC CEO Program is designed to recognize and provide financial support to Shareholders and their descendants who are seeking more education to increase their career opportunities through means other than full time traditional college or university attendance.

Who May Apply
  1. The CEO Program awards scholarships to Afognak Natives who are voting Shareholders of the Corporation and their lineal descendants as defined by Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) of 1971, including any legally adopted children.
  2. Must be accepted to, or enrolled in, accredited or non-accredited institutions of higher learning, vocational or trade schools.
  3. Qualified employees and board members who meet all other qualifications under “Who May Apply”.
  4. Applicants cannot apply CEO funds towards full-time traditional college or university attendance.  Full-time traditional college or university status is defined as follows:
    1. Undergraduate – 12 or more credit hours.
    2. Graduate – 9 or more credit hours.

Program Funding
Each CEO recipient may apply twice per calendar year and can receive a maximum of $2,000 per calendar year. A CEO applicant may apply for HEP funding during the same year, provided that CEO funding has not been awarded for the same purpose.

Review Process
The ANC Scholarship Committee acts as the Career Enhancement Opportunities Program Committee. When an application is received at the ANC office, the staff will distribute the application to the Committee members for review. The total award will be determined by polling the Committee members, averaging the amounts stated by each member, and dividing by the number of members polled.
